Teak Outdoor Furniture: Distinguishing Grade A, B, C and How to Choose the Right Grade When Importing from Vietnam
If you're sourcing teak outdoor furniture from Vietnam, the question "Grade A, B or C?" is one of the most critical decisions affecting product quality, pricing, and end-customer satisfaction. At Studio HGP, after 16+ years manufacturing and exporting teak furniture to the EU and North America, we've seen many first-time buyers confused about the grades. This guide explains the differences clearly.
1. What Is Teak? Why Is It Preferred for Outdoor Furniture?
Teak (Tectona grandis) is a tropical hardwood native to South and Southeast Asia. What makes teak ideal for outdoor furniture:
- High natural oil content: Teak contains silica and natural oils, providing exceptional water resistance compared to most other woods.
- Extreme durability: Under European standard EN 350, teak is Class 1 (durability class) — extremely durable, able to withstand harsh weather without cracking or rotting.
- Dimensional stability: Teak doesn't expand or contract significantly with humidity changes, keeping joints tight over time.
- Aesthetics: Warm golden-brown when freshly produced, naturally weathers to an elegant silver-grey after a few months outdoors — a quality many exterior designers appreciate.
- Finish compatibility: Works with teak oil, Danish oil, tung oil, or can be left natural.
However, not all teak is equal. This is where the grading system comes in.
2. Teak Grade A, B, C — Detailed Comparison
This is an informal grading system widely used in the export furniture industry, based on the wood's position in the tree and aesthetic characteristics:
| Criterion | Grade A (Premium) | Grade B (Standard) | Grade C (Value) |
| Position in tree | Heartwood – central core | Between heartwood and sapwood | Near bark (sapwood) or juvenile |
| Color | Even golden-brown, consistent | Golden-brown, may be uneven | Lighter, white sapwood patches |
| Knots | None or very few small knots | Some small to medium knots | Many knots, possibly large |
| Oil content | Very high – evenly distributed | Medium to high | Low – less natural oil |
| Outdoor durability | Excellent – 20–40+ years | Good – 10–20 years | Average – 5–10 years |
| Grain | Straight, even | Mostly straight, occasional wave | More wavy |
| Relative price | 100% (base) | 65–80% | 40–60% |
| Best for | Contract hospitality, premium retail | Mid-market retail, residential | Budget/promotional projects |
⚠️ Important note: There is no mandatory international standard defining "Grade A, B, C" for teak. Different manufacturers may use the same terms differently. Always request physical samples before placing a production order.
3. How to Identify Genuine, High-Quality Teak
3.1 On-site inspection at the factory
- Smell it: Teak heartwood has a distinctive leather-like, slightly pungent smell. If the wood has no smell or smells like ordinary wood, suspect sapwood or non-teak species.
- Rub the surface: Grade A teak leaves an oily residue on your hand — a sign of high natural oil content.
- Observe freshly cut color: Heartwood teak when freshly cut is characteristically golden, with no white patches (sapwood is pale white).
- Check knots: Grade A allows ≤ 2 knots with diameter ≤ 10mm per face.
3.2 Documentation to request from the manufacturer
- FSC Certificate: FSC CoC (Chain of Custody) certification confirms wood from sustainably managed forests. Mandatory for the EU market.
- EUDR Declaration: From December 2025, EUDR requires importers to trace wood origin to individual forest plots (geolocation). Ensure your manufacturer is EUDR-ready.
- Species Declaration: Phytosanitary certificate confirming species (Tectona grandis) and country of origin.
4. Key Questions to Ask Vietnamese Manufacturers Before Ordering
- "Is your teak from plantation or natural forest?" — Plantation teak is more common and sustainable. FSC plantation teak still has good quality when properly processed.
- "How exactly do you define Grade A?" — Request a written description: minimum heartwood percentage, maximum allowed knots, target moisture content.
- "Do you check moisture content before shipment?" — Outdoor teak furniture should reach 12–15% moisture content (EMC suitable for EU/NA climate). Over-wet wood will shrink and crack after export.
- "Do you provide a mock-up sample before mass production?" — Always request 1–2 pre-production samples before approving full production.
- "What does your QC process include?" — A good manufacturer will have at least 3 checkpoints: raw material → semi-finished → finished product.
- "Do you have FSC CoC certification? What is the certificate number?" — Verifiable directly on the FSC website (info.fsc.org) with the certificate code.
💡 Pro tip: When receiving goods, use a pin-type moisture meter to spot-check. If moisture content exceeds 15%, the goods risk cracking or warping after arriving in drier climates (such as EU in winter).
5. Teak vs. Other Woods: Quick Comparison
| Wood | Outdoor durability | Price (vs teak) | FSC availability | Key strength |
| Teak Grade A | ★★★★★ | 100% | Available | Premium, long-lasting, natural |
| Acacia | ★★★★ | 40–60% | Available | Good value, durable, FSC common |
| Eucalyptus | ★★★★ | 35–55% | Very available | Rapidly renewable, eco-friendly |
| Shorea/Meranti | ★★★ | 50–70% | Harder to find | Lighter than teak |
| Aluminium (powder coat) | ★★★★★ | Varies | N/A | Lightweight, maintenance-free |
6. Conclusion: Which Grade Should You Choose?
Grade A is the right choice if: your product is in the premium segment (retail from €800+/set or 4–5 star hospitality), your end customer values color consistency and 20+ year lifespan, you need products for coastal or poolside environments.
Grade B suits: mid-market segment (€300–800/set retail), customers wanting genuine teak at a more reasonable budget, residential applications rather than high-intensity commercial environments.
Grade C or FSC Acacia for: price-sensitive projects needing the lowest FOB possible, customers willing to maintain more frequently, short-term or promotional applications.
